Interview with Jennifer Lindsey from Advanced Imaging, INC.

Hello, my fellow sonography peeps šŸ˜Š

Today, I am so happy to introduce you to Jennifer Lindsey from Advanced Imaging. They have been in business for quite a while and Jennifer teaches sonographers how to open their own mobile ultrasound business smoothly and efficiently. I personally have been following her for quite a few months now and her podcasts/free content have been of huge help in my new business, CLOVER Diagnostic Center.

Well, without further ado. Welcome Jennifer, thank you for joining us! šŸ˜

Tell us a bit about yourself

I was born in Florida and raised on an Indiana farm. Some of my favorite memories as a kid are sneaking out to the barn with my brother and checking out the big combine tractors and tools. Sometimes I wonder how we survived šŸ˜Š. Iā€™m a cancer survivor, business owner, certified coffee-holic, but my favorite title is mama to my little toddler.

What is your background? Education, Work Experience, etc. & How did the idea for your business come about?

This will surprise most people, but Iā€™m actually not an ultrasound tech myself! Since college, Iā€™ve always been in healthcare, but my husband and I both have an entrepreneurial spirit and knew we wanted to have our own thing. When we moved out of state and I got a job I absolutely hated, we knew it was time! We started our ultrasound business as a clinic actually, because back in 2004, mobile ultrasound was really only used in triage situations. Once the imaging quality for portable equipment started becoming similar to the larger equipment, it dawned on us that we could take this equipment out to the physician office and see nearly 100% of their patients as opposed to being one of many referral destinations. We got with our healthcare attorneys, spent a ton of money on research and the rest is history. This is why I love our coaching division so much, because we are able to create a step by step plan for our students and save about 70% on the startup as opposed to doing it on your own like we did!

How long have you been in business?Ā

Almost 17 years! I cannot tell you how much this industry has changed. When we first started our mobile division, I had to drive a CD over to our radiologist's house to finalize the interpretation. The industry has come a long way!

What motivates you?Ā

Providing exceptional services is such a motivator to me. Whether itā€™s our physician clients for our mobile ultrasound business or our coaching clients, the fact that we can create a win/win scenario for our clients is so exciting. Creating new options, adding in what our clients need as they grow, itā€™s so much fun to be able to craft our services around that.

Who has been your greatest inspiration?

Our coaching students and clients! It is truly inspiring to me to watch someone believe in themselves, work past the nervousness we ALL have when we start something new, and get that first account. Even after over a decade of coaching others, it still is just as exciting as the first time.

What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?

I absolutely love the fact that it is up to me (and my team) to determine the success, growth, and mindset of our business. Now, many people likely think that is a double-edged sword and it definitely is, because you are responsible for the good, the bad, and the ugly. BUT, being able to quickly pivot should something happen in your business or in the world such as the issues weā€™ve seen as of late, is so crucial. I didnā€™t have to wait for a boss or administration to tell me what to do when the economy shut down for the pandemic and we knew that we would be seeing drops in patient counts. We quickly met with our staff, brainstormed ideas, came up with a plan, and executed it immediately and were able to pivot quickly to add in options for our community that not only helped patients, but kept us steady with our business. We couldnā€™t have done that as employees.

Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur?

Absolutely, I think there are three things that youā€™ve GOT to have to be a success.

  1. First, before anything else, is mindset. It doesnā€™t matter if everyone in the world believes in you, if you donā€™t believe in yourself youā€™re doomed from the start.

  2. Secondly, you have to have work ethic. As a business owner, you are the end all-be all. You donā€™t have a boss telling you what the next step is or making sure you complete your tasks. Having a strong work ethic is imperative as an entrepreneur.

  3. And third, if you believe in yourself and add in a strong work ethic, having a plan in place to start, operate, and grow your business is so important. Sitting down and planning out your steps in each stage of business will help you tremendously.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

It has been so satisfying for me to watch us grow so organically. The culture weā€™ve always created was one of servicing others. I truly believe as a business owner that if you focus on service instead of money, you create a legacy where the revenue comes to your business because of the way you provide services to others, not in spite of it.

If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

I would tell someone just starting out to put a plan in place, believe you can achieve your goals, surround yourself with those that will cheer you on, and GO FOR IT.Ā
